drawings + music video ...

to listen + view, click: youtube link ...

a fulfilling project - at times tedious, but mostly informative ...

  1. in the last days of February I discovered a drawing program for my Mac that provided the kind of tools that fit my process and interests; one that is capable of layering, editing, and utilizing a variety of calligraphic tools ...
  2. i became totally disenchanted with the political rhetoric surrounding health care legislation, tea party dogma, bullying behavior, and a general disgust with our culture’s lack of ethics and the dichotomies of tolerance - i knew i wouldn’t have much to say, but wanted to fulfill my commitment to posting daily ...
  3. i began to recognize a gradual shift in my work over the past year of intensive production - and with the painting “logos”, which began to culminate in February, i knew i had to plot and research to see where the changes were going ... drawings, like improvising music, get me there quicker ...
  4. there are a lot of changes and challenges i’m facing with health, studio, and domestics that i wanted to play close to the vest - not to be secretive, but to not disempower the prayers by sending words out prematurely ...

the result was thirty-one layered drawings/paintings in as many days ...

they began with a reliance on old tricks but quickly evolved toward trying to locate a space in the picture plane to insert the elements of picture making that interest me most - namely; lyrical interplay between expressive notations, a language of inspired, repetitive shapes and counter-balanced oppositions, color field layering with erasures that reveal previous activity, and identifying the most essential ingredients ...

as i grew more satisfied with the results, the more they began to resemble the painting “logos” ...

sometimes it takes time to become co-ordinated between mediums [venues] when you find your voice ...

for a musician, it’s the same if you play solo, trio, or orchestra - you have to try to apply your voice to the accompanying structures, acoustics, and environments ... a lot of tricky balancing that requires confidence, skill, and self awareness without self consciousness ...

speaking of music - “nero’s melody” - a piece i’ve flirted with for years, and probably will continue to explore for years to come ...

i needed to create an environment to parody the notion; there were no violins when Rome burned - it didn’t happen in one afternoon - and Nero’s behavior or musical proclivity isn’t the subject of investigation ...

so why set out to complete the piece now - especially since it has little to do with the drawing series ...

the month of March - the Ides of March - soothsayers and pagan spring rituals - the political and social machinations of current events - the display of some of the most grotesque news as a media festival; the signage of social tipping points ....

the piece begins with a dream-like, circus riff - a Fellini-esque interplay, like a combination of ”Strawberry Fields” and “Benefit For Mr. Kite” with ocarina, accordion, pan flute, violin, classical guitar, and pizzicato strings - an unlikely ensemble, but suitable for a satirical cabaret ...

it progresses with more classical elements while introducing the melancholy melody and a few discordant tension points to offset the odd lament - later, transitions back to the sardonic atmosphere before bridging to a structural breakdown while restating the theme - it circuitously simplifies, mutates, and fades ...

i’m pleased by the efforts, grateful for learning, but a bit overwhelmed by the tasks ahead if i think beyond present circumstances ...

one thing for sure - every turn in the road brings new surprises - and it seems the road is turning again while providing evidence that what i studied and learned up to this point is only preparation for the next phase of life and work ...

and as Pope Julius asks of Michelangelo in Irving Stone’s “Agony and the Ecstasy” referring to the completion of the Sistine Chapel: “When will it end?” - to which Mich replies; “When I am finished” ...

golden dreams ...

i’m a painter - so i paint ...
nearly every day - one way or another, since 1972 ...

with humility; i’ve had the opportunity to experiment and explore just about every genre and material out there to arrive at my own ‘voice’ ...
done it all - from gargantuan three dimensional installations, environmental, traditional, performance, collaborative, and conceptual ...
the common denominator - paint - has remained my primary vehicle of expression ...

for now, why is less important than that fact ...

during post graduate studies at the university of the arts [philadelphia, 1979], a colleague recommended that i contact a small paint manufacturer in upstate new york to seek resolve to a technical issue i was having with a series of drawing and xerox collages ...

i wanted the objects veiled in translucent color as though they were stain glass images - veils that would not interfere chemically with archival standards of paper ...
short of being encumbered by the weight of glass or the static limitations and color selections of plexiglas or acetate, there didn’t seem to be a product manufactured that provided a thin enough viscosity with consistent coverage and saturation -translucent consistency was the objective ...

quality acrylic paint and mediums for artists were still relatively limited by most manufacturers’ predisposition for emulating oil paints rather than exploring the virtues and potentials of plastic ...
[and to some extent - still is - but that has more to do with less progressive educational and artistic standards] ...

i made the call and surprisingly spoke to the owner/alchemist that understood my dilemma immediately and provided suggestions and samples to achieve solutions ...
this relationship resonated with my belief that “if you can think it, you can make it “ ...
the alchemist’s name was sam golden, and in the years that followed i found that there was rarely a technical or creative issue related to materials that couldn’t be solved with thoughtful expertise by calling the magic number ...
additionally, i was always kept in the loop of newly developed products i hadn’t considered ...

after many forays and sponsorships with other paint manufacturers, i began to use golden acrylic paint exclusively by 1988 ...
a material that has consistently provided me satisfaction over the years - if i was having a creative problem, i could rest assured that it didn’t have anything to do with the paint ... from the simplest things like the paint containers, lids, and bottles - designed to be user friendly with minimal or no waste ...
when you’re on a roll, you don’t have time to fuss with some package designers’ fetishes ...
even the smell of the paint is less offensive to my senses ... and i still have containers with usable paint remaining in them since 1990 ...
whenever i’ve gotten a shipment - [and its’ never cheap] - i feel like a gift arrives ...
i open each and every container under the auspices of inspecting the content - but actually to marvel at the creamy or fluid consistency, odor, magic, and possibilities of the product ...
i'm a difficult customer, as many will attest - but since that fateful day in 1979, i've not had a singular disappointment - quite the contrary - usually unexpectedly surprised by some nuance or innovation ...
even the shipping amazes me - double cardboard and padded with unrivaled care - [and i’m the kind of guy that expects my sliced cheese at the deli counter to not have overlapping edges before being wrapped] ...

needless to say, golden paints have provided me with a vehicle to realize my ‘voice’ and vision as a painter - like yo yo ma’s favorite cello, or keith jarrett’s piano - yeah, it could probably be done without them - but having them provides a confidence and freedom to explore other concerns ...

so it shouldn’t be any surprise that i’ve often dreamt about visiting the manufacturing facility [oz] in new berlin, new york - but somehow always thought that i shouldn’t violate the privacy or sanctity of the alchemist’s studio ...

this week, another dream comes true ...

marfa public radio - symposium ...

5/1/08
6:26 AM

you gotta love it - it’s times like these when all the white-knuckled dealings with the frustrations of technology make it all worthwhile - for me ...

a month or so ago when ‘it’ was brought to my attention [by james carroll of new arts],
i had hoped that a windfall would allow some roaming around the desert southwest for a few days [like i used to do quite a bit back in the late 80’s and 90’s] and maybe end up in marfa, texas for a symposium on the writings of donald judd with some of what i consider to be the real ‘art brains’ of our time ...

i was lucky enough to spend time dialoging with some of these people over the years, and one way or another they profoundly effected the way i think about art today - and now a few of them will be under one roof - in marfa? - a town i know nothing about, except being the setting of the james dean movie ‘giant’ and later, the judd repository - which after seeing an article in architectural record in ‘92 influenced the studios i’ve renovated, owned, and lived in for over a decade ...
the sojourn would’ve been nice, but as april drew to a close i figured i’d just have to settle for reading some version of it somewhere ...

yesterday i learned they will be streaming ‘live’ from marfa public radio this weekend ...

watching you too ...

veil #24 ...

i’m always more than a little surprised by the discrepancies in communication between web space and real space - and people i talk to usually have reasonable explanations that enlighten me in ways that help me feel too dumb to live in their world - or maybe its just some kind of pride thing - anyway, the loop begins ...

i see art -
[galleries, museums, windows, billboards, tv, print adverts, the web, etc...]

i respond - give off some evidence of cognition -
[double-take - gasp - sigh - shake my head - gesture, speak aloud - invite conversation - dialogue - monologue - write in my journal or the margins of pages, comment on sites, etc...]

i see others see -
i know they’re looking -
[by watching them, catching a reflection in a window, mirror, or traffic analysis programs, etc...]

in the real world i can usually gauge audience response; visually or audibly ...
statistical analysis of sales as a result of pedestrian and print advertising is measurable ...
popularity of institutional art[museums, galleries, brokers, etc...] is defined by attendance, reviews, purchasing, trickle-down fashion, and street buzz, ...
site ‘hits’ are countable ...

so in this world of connectivity, interactivity, and fingertip availability - what are all the anonymous visitors thinking that pass by - and often spend considerable time looking at or reading what i and millions others post ...

is it a matter of not caring - desensitization ...
casual browsing without thinking or response - careless or clueless ...
some odd satisfaction of being able to get something without investing anything of your self ...
a new form of disrespect or hybrid narcissism that is disengaging and dismissive ...
the pleasures of anonymous voyeurism ...
do the operational mechanics of response make it too cumbersome to leave comments ...
are we afraid to be judged by our response [more so than in the ‘real’ world] ...
is a written word more of a commitment than other methods of reaction ...
have our thoughts become currency - what is the going rate for a plot of intellectual property ...
are we too busy to be bothered - and if so, doesn’t that beg a little assessment ...
or is it really like surfing - where the act requires an attentiveness that precludes other involvement ...
like most people, i don’t take a lack of ‘comments’ personally - its not like i’m distributing lifesaving commodities [?] - i’m just curious when i evaluate the ratios between site visitors and comments - totally disproportionate ...
imagine an audience leaving an art gallery, poetry reading, scientific symposium, or political rally blank faced and speechless - kinda spooky ...

what do you think ...

"Be Still My Beating Heart"

Be still my beating heart
It would be better to be cool
It's not time to be open just yet
A lesson once learned is so hard to forget
Be still my beating heart
Or I'll be taken for a fool
It's not healthy to run at this pace
The blood runs so red to my face
I've been to every single book I know
To soothe the thoughts that plague me so

I sink like a stone that's been thrown in the ocean
My logic has drowned in a sea of emotion
Stop before you start
Be still my beating heart

Restore my broken dreams
Shattered like a falling glass
I'm not ready to be broken just yet
A lesson once learned is so hard to forget

Be still my beating heart
You must learn to stand your ground
It's not healthy to run at this pace
The blood runs so red to my face
I've been to every single book I know
To soothe the thoughts that plague me so

Stop before you start
Be still my beating heart

Never to be wrong
Never to make promises that break
It's like singing in the wind
Or writing on the surface of a lake
And I wriggle like a fish caught on dry land
And I struggle to avoid any help at hand

I sink like a stone that's been thrown in the ocean
My logic has drowned in a sea of emotion
Stop before you start
Be still my beating heart"

advice from a friend ...

man you should post that email.
-------------- Original message ----------------------
From: Paul Harryn
hi michael - thanks for the concern - haven't stopped working - just
haven't been around the techno stuff lately (computers, digital
recorders, cameras, telephones, etc) - just needed a break for more
meditation, healing, reading, drawing without goals, and helping my
son become an eagle scout - we have two weeks to attempt the
impossible - partly the result of teenage procrastination and
ambivalence (from both of us) - also, had one hell of a cold/flu/
virus/alien infestation/ plague - whatever ...
amazing piece of video o'keefe sent you - 207 people x 5 minutes of
stillness each - 81 people short of a full day [81 x 5= 405 minutes +
1,035 minutes (from the 207) = 1,440 divided by 60 = 24 hrs.] sorry,
my brain works that way.
like david lynch says in 'catching the big fish', if the square root
of the worlds' population (approx. 8,000 people) would all meditate
or say a prayer at the same time and place - or do anything with some
degree of unity for that matter (even vote) - the (butterfly) effect
would be profound - [einstein's unified field theory]
also been reading alot to fill in some gaps for an hour tv interview
on tuesday with the 'new arts program' down near philly ...
- breathing ...
soon as this eagle thing is a wrap, i'd like to meet you for a
meeting and lunch somewhere ..
thank you again, p

Paul, You okay? You haven't posted in a while. And as for the
comment on my latest, I thought they did it for five minutes? Michael

only in forgetting ...

for the past seven years i’ve photographed the forsythia blooming on the berm outside my studio - from eighteen two foot plants to a jungle of wild cadmium yellow. maybe its the promise of spring after a cold, gray northeast winter or the first burst of real color - no matter - i always photograph them with the intention of doing a painting and had canvases of varying sizes waiting along with this beautiful cobalt blue vase i found a few years back - still nothing - until this morning ...

just ‘finished’ a large abstract oil , so all the brushes and varnishes are warmed up - my chops are back for this genre and with all the vanishing leaves and cold air, my eyes and soul are ready to go there ...
i used to feel apologetic for occasionally enjoying a foray into representational painting - [with all the silly stigmatizing and categorization that goes] - anymore, i just do it for my soul ...
like keith jarrett occasionally playing a bach interlude or johnny cash singin’ gospel - its all music ...

besides, i need a little break from the brain bangin’ for a few days ... including bad news and politics - that’s a hard one because my morbid curiosity seems to end up on cnn, bbc, npr, etc. - or maybe its because beneath this socialized callous there’s an optimism, hope, and innocence that hasn’t been bred out of me and believes one day i’ll turn on news to enlightenment breaking out in different parts of the world -

wow, too much fresh air and sunshine this morning ...

vision said ...

hard to believe its been ten years after
to tell a vision ...
this was the time of the year
when changes began to form the basis
of what would become the 'paris paintings’ ...
the travel, experimentation ...
colors, cultures, and changes ...
and changes again ...

[time to document the 'paris paintings'
as an updated version of my pursuits
with a similar 'salon' motif].

too.., or not ...

urgency ...
what i still haven't done continues to haunt me ...
i wake in the middle of the night with lists of words
and images of projects
scrolling through my half sleep ...
until the tedium of recalling them
exhausts me back to dream time ...
inspiration, or knowing what to do next
has never been my problem;
its always financing or time management
that becomes the issue ...
lately i've been thinking about the two books
i have in the works for nearly a decade -
one is a process/memoir 'thing'
and the other is
a perspective on contemporary art ...
since i'm not a 'writer' by training,
i seem to have difficulties finishing ...
or knowing what finished is ...
that being said,
it's time to get them out there!

just walk ...

strange how thoughts come and go - i read something this morning during my usual morning meditation that jumped off the page - "balance and poise amid change..." - also, over the past couple of days, whether reading something on art, physics, movie reviews, or geopolitical concerns - the idea of losing 'self' keeps popping. then, for whatever reason, i remembered an incident in vivid detail that occured when i was about ten years old; i went fishing with my father one early spring evening after a heavy april rain storm - the creek was wild and the wind was fierce - a large fallen tree stretched across the stream which my father sure-footedly navigated with ease - as i followed, i began to lose my 'balance and poise' about halfway over - seeing my discomfort my dad simply directed me to "don't think about 'it' - just walk" - needless to say, i ended up in the creek. all my dad said was "i doubt that'll happen again". i haven't thought about that in forty years - why now? why not every day?
